The most unusual and fun barber shop (or hairdresser if you prefer) in Zürich (possibly even Europe if not the world) is definitely Frankie B. in the Niederdorf, the old town of Zürich. An institution for over 25 years his shop on Rindermarkt 3 is jam-packed full of fun images including several original pieces of my artwork. Always in a good mood Frankie will give you a top-notch haircut while you listen to music, sip on an ice-cold beer and meet some of the local originals.
I never miss a visit at Frankie B. when I am in Zürich.
Der genialste Coiffeur Laden in Zürich ist für mich ohne Zweifel der von Frankie B. am Rindermarkt 3. Kein Besuch in Zürich ist für mich komplett ohne einen Haarschnitt und einige kühle Bierchen (und viele lustige Stunden) bei Freunden in seinem Laden. Wenn man genau hinsieht entdeckt man sogar einige Original-Ian Zeichnungen an den Wänden.

Illustrationen zu einem Artikel von Simone Schmid erschienen in der NZZ am Sonntag am 4. Mai 2008.
Hier ein Einblick in einen Auftrag den ich für die Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag zeichnen durfte.
Es ging darum Wählertypen diverser Schweizer Parteien in den nationalen Wahlen als Figur zu symbolisieren.
Der SVP Wähler, die Grünen Wählerin, Der SP Wähler, die CVP Wählerin der FDP Wähler und auch eine ‘Nicht-Wählerin’ die eher vage und gesichtslos sein sollte.
Zuerst habe ich die verschiedenen Charaktertypen der Wähler als Bleistift Skizzen festzuhalten versucht.

Sobald die Skizzen fertig waren, wurden sie an die Autorin und an die Redaktion geschickt um sicherzugehen, dass ich die verschiedenen Wähler ‘Archetypen’ auch richtig getroffen hatte.
Nachdem ich von der Redaktion das grüne Licht erhalten hatte, konnte ich mich an die Reinzeichnungen machen.

This is a map of the Rhine region of Switzerland from Basle to Lake Constance.
Points of interest are highlighted with spot illustrations, such as: The Tinguely Museum in Basle, The roman amphitheatre in Augusta Raurica, The towers of the city of Rheinfelden, Bad Zurzach, Tössegg, The cloister in Rheinau, The Rhine Falls, The Munot in Schaffhausen, The wooden bridge in Diessenhofen and the incredible old town in Stein am Rhein.
The map was created 100% in Adobe Illustrator CS3 and is completely vector based. It is intended for an educational publication and the name fields are left blank so the students can fill in the correct names in the printed book.

Interessante Orte und Sehenswürdigkeiten sind mit kleinen Spot Illustrationen hervorgehoben worden. Das Tinguely Museum in Basel, das Römische Amphitheater in Augusta Raurica, die Türme der Stadt Rheinfelden, Bad Zurzach, Tössegg, das Kloster in Rheinau, der Rheinfall, das Munot in Schaffhausen, die gedeckte Brücke von Diessenhofen und die wunderschöne Altstadt von Stein am Rhein.
Diese Karte wurde für einen Lehrmittel Verlag geschaffen und ist eine 100%ige Vektor Illustration. Die Felder sind absichtlich leer gelassen worden, damit die Schüler die Sehenswürdigkeiten identifizieren und betiteln können.

A cover for U-Comix magazine, I am guessing from around 1985.
This is one of my very early published pieces and one of my first covers.
I still remember to this day: it was a fantastic feeling to see my artwork at every newsstand…
(even though the printers took my signature off.)

Here is a short YouTube video in which I very briefly show how I created the Irish Players for the new ‘Footballheroes See Red’ book.
I click through some of the layers and talk very briefly about some of the software used.
In the case of the Irish team, I started with rough pencil sketches which I then scanned and imported into Adobe Illustrator CS3.
I created all my black line work in Illustrator using the pressure sensitivity from the Wacom tablet to give me the stroke widths and the right look and feel for my lines. The Footballheroes books are always printed in such a high quality process and on such top-notch paper that I wanted everything to look as sharp as possible.
Finally I imported the lines into Corel Painter IX.5 and colored the players using digital watercolor.
Final artwork was delivered as 300 ppi TIFF files.

When I am on the phone I am almost always doodling. Sometimes it’s just cubes and geometric 3D shapes, sometimes it’s plants growing all over the page and sometimes I just start a drawing without thinking. I have no idea what it’s going to end up being until I hang up the phone….
