My brother Joel Ben Marsden, who also directed and wrote “Ill Gotten Gains”
DVD box Ill Gotten Gains
now heads up the animation department at Bus Productiones in Madrid. He often works on highly interesting and inspired animation projects for various clients. Recently he collaborated with Aardman in England on some animated pieces. When he left Britain, I sent him this litte digital postcard. wallace and grommit already missing Joel

Shortly thereafter he was placed on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list, I believe.

Film Noir Scene with wacom tablet in Illustrator

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I am planning to draw a full graphic novel more or less directly in Adobe Illustrator CS2 soon using the Wacom tablet. In order to get the look and feel I would like to achieve down, I have been making rough little doodles directly in the program. Although I have been using Illustrator for many years now and I am quite familiar with it, I still like to play around with colors and how the linework might look. At the same time I am creating and saving brushes, putting together color libraries….saving and revisiting sketches.

That kind of thing.

This example is a little too busy and overworked in my opinion.

But that’s the whole point. To find out how I want it, and how I don’t want it.

Rocky drinks his master’s Pastis

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

This a scan from one of the sketchbooks I usually carry around with me.

I generally doodle with a Rotring ArtPen when I am out and about. It gives me a nice black line and somewhat of the same feeling and handling I like with my old-fashioned dip pens.

This particular sketch was made at the counter of my local French Village café , where hunters, winemakers and other local celebrities (and their dogs) come to enjoy one or two or more chilled rosé or Pastis.

Sometimes when I like a doodle or sketch, I play with them some more after I return to my studio. Sometimes I might color them in with watercolor or gouache – or I might scan the artwork and colorize it in Photoshop CS2 or Painter 9.5.

Here I have included a ‘before and after’ untouched and then colorized in PS CS2 using the Watercolor brushes in PS.

The pleasure is all mine.

Well it certainly took me long enough…but I am delighted to finally have my own little blog on my site all to myself.

I will try and make it a habit to upload sketches, scans and drawings as well as updates on ongoing or even future projects.

I will also include snapshots – if there is anything interesting going on, or if I am on the road or attending festivals and the likes.

I thank you for your interest and for dropping by! Please come back from time to time and I hope you enjoy your visit.
