Ian Marsden and his first Google Doodles briefly mentioned on Xooglers

Monday, July 28th, 2008

There is a blog entry on Doug Edward’s Xooglers blog where he talks about the early google doodle cartoons and my involvement in their creation.

In it he mentions that not much luck was had with subsequent cartoonists. It’s a shame that the most logical solution didn’t spring to mind. Simply pick up the phone and call Ian again.

Logo of Barbados online community Cool Barbados dot Com

Some friends of mine in Barbados have started a really cool new online community called COOL BARBADOS (http://www.cool-barbados.com)

Of course the site is completely free.

This is a place where native Bajans who live in Barbados can upload and share videos and pics of their favorite spots, fetes, neighborhoods, roti shops, rum shops, fish frys or even barber shops or kite flying spots. Anything and everything.

Likewise visitors to the island of Barbados and fans of Bajan life and culture can also share their photos, films and experiences, they can get in touch with locals and other friends of Barbados and find new locations and experiences they might want to enjoy on their next visit to the island.

People who have never visited beautiful Barbados can get a first glimpse and experience of some of the wonderful things they might encounter.

http://www.cool-barbados.com/

The basic idea is also that you can take a short Bajan vacation from your computer anytime you like. Take a break, a walk along the beach, sip a virtual rum and relax.

It might be snowing where you are but not on COOL BARBADOS.

Bronze Plaque – Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy – Sons of the Desert Culver Hotel

Monday, July 7th, 2008

This is a bronze plaque I designed for the ‘Sons of the Desert’ – The international Laurel and Hardy appreciation society. (Homepage: Sons of the Desert)

Shortly after city founder Harry Culver opened the landmark Culver Hotel it appeared in several films throughout the ‘golden age of comedy’. Producer Hal Roach featured the building in his ‘Our Gang’, ‘Charley Chase’ and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy comedies. The hotel is particularily prominent in his films “Putting Pants on Philip” and “Leave ‘em Laughin’” with Laurel and Hardy. Placed by the way out west tent of the sons of the desert 2003.

Ian Marsden the artist who designed the plaque also designed the ‘Duke’s Place’ logo and mural, trompe l’oeil for the lobby bar and also was commissioned to paint several large pop art canvases for the hotel restaurant.

Comic-Con

This is my ComicCon badge from 2003. (Can it really be five years ago already??)
The Comic-Con badge for Ian Marsden

I attended the convention with 2 very good friends and we had a great time. There were so many interesting people to see and meet. Stan Lee was there – very cool to meet him, albeit it very briefly. Another thing that sticks to mind was Dan Piraro’s (Bizarro) one-man show. Great fun even though there were some technical difficulties. He’s a very funny guy.
I had met him previously at an NCS event where he also did his shtick on stage and MCd the Reuben Awards ceremony.

After the convention we made sure we haunted the irish pubs of the Gaslamp district in a befitting fashion as well.

Farbige Illustration für die Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag zum Artikel ‘Der Kampf um die Publikation’ von Ian D. Marsden

Roboter Skizzen zur Illustration \'Der Kampf um Publikation\' für die NZZ am Sonntag

Bleistiftskizzen der Roboter in meinem Moleskine Skizzenbuch. Preperatory pencil sketches of the robots in my Moleskine sketchbook.

Layout in Adobe Illustrator

This is the Layout stage in Adobe Illustrator. The two scientists have completed line-art but aren’t colored yet. The robots are only scribbles – I was waiting for approval from the editors and also still creating pencil sketches of the robots. I am a big fan of robots so I wanted to create some really nice, retro-style robots.

Die fertige Illustration – erstellt in Adobe Illustrator CS3. Erschienen in der NZZ am Sonntag am 6 Juli 2008. The finished illustration created in Adobe Illustrator published in NZZ on Sunday July 6th 2008.
