Pirate and Parrot: Realtime Cartoon Tutorial YouTube Video Artist: Ian David Marsden
Hi,
In this brief video I am doing a rough freehand sketch of a pirate with a parrot on his shoulder. Hard to tell from the drawing which one of the two has a higher I.Q. I have to admit. Safe to assume that together they might not quite make it to 100, but that doesn’t matter. They are lovely individuals and they have hearts of gold. The parrot however is slightly distressed, because he misplaced a winning Euro Millions ticket, but that is another matter entirely.

Here is a video of me drawing a quick sketch and coloring it in Autodesk SketchBook Pro software. I am using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX digital tablet screen on this one.
A wonderful tool which I can wholeheartedly recommend to any professional illustrator, graphic designer or cartoonist.

I made occasional cuts to stay within the 10 minute length limit imposed by YouTube so the drawing jumps along miraculously a few times, but I hope the steps I took are still clear.

In this video you can see an illustration I just completed for Punkt Wirtschaftsmagazin on the topic of tropical illnesses and viruses. Each virus had to be transformed into a character based on actual images of the virii. The idea is that travellers arriving at a tropical destination are greeted by various diseases as they get off the plane. I decided to give the image a retro vibe (because I like retro vibes) and therefore made it the plane a Super Constellation and made the crew and passengers look like colonial tourists of the era.
The drawing was roughly sketched on paper. Scanned in and then the line art and coloring were done 100% as vector art in Adobe Illustrator CS5. You can see me turn on and off some of the layers.
