Cartoon Art: Santa Claus and Rudolph (almost) meet Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson

Santa Claus and Rudolph (almost) meet Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson

This cartoon artwork was created the old-fashioned way. I sketched it out in pencil and then drew the line art with a dip pen with a Brause & Iserlohn nib and Pelikan Nr. 12 black ink.

The art was for my own personal family Holiday Card a few years back and at first I was going to have it printed in black and white. Later I decided to scan in the drawing and color it digitally.

I figured I could create a nice warm effect with the light from the fire place reflecting off the characters and create a warm, cozy, late night in a British Manor house.
I also thought it might be fun to really have Santa and the reindeers peeking out from the shadows.

Here is the initial line work:

Here is a video showing the process of coloring the artwork in layers in Corel Painter software.

Here is a detail of the final color (click to see enlarged version):

By the way, the original artwork is now in Jerry Margolin’s collection of Sherlockian Art. You can read more about that, in an older blog entry.

I hope you enjoy this little peek at my process of creating a cartoon.
Thank you for visiting my blog as always – and Happy Holidays and all the best for the New Year!

Your pal, Ian

November is MOVEMBER – Don Quichote Illustration by Ian David Marsden

November is MOVEMBER - Don Quichote Illustration by Ian David Marsden

OK. Let’s face it. Even though I am a grown man I still can’t grow a decent mustache. It gets all curly and fuzzy, and frankly annoying as hell.

I tried it once, lost the few friends I had, had a strange dinner with only mustachioed men all staring at each other’s mustaches, almost divorced myself from myself and then shaved that sucker off with mucho gusto. It drove me crazy. It didn’t help that I looked like a Norwegian porn star, and not the good kind of Norwegian porn star I might add. Oh how I wish I could sport a little David Niven pencil mustache, even just for a good cause. But I will not subject the world to the hideousness that will never again be seen unless I am stranded on a desert island, in which case it doesn’t get seen either – except by my lover, the coconut head lady (even her mustache will be nicer than mine).

However I wholeheartedly support the concept, the idea and the cause, so here instead is my Movember Mustache Illustration.

More about Movember below.

Peace.

Ian

OVERVIEW OF MOVEMBER

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

Once registered at www.movember.com, men start Movember 1st clean shaven. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

I received the assignment to illustrate a story about ‘insects’ being used for agricultural purposes, kind of like private armies. It didn’t take me long to come up with the concept of having a General MacArthur wasp and General Montgomery ladybug. I think I pulled it off… :)
