The Very First Google Doodles by Ian David Marsden

The Very First Google Doodles by Ian David Marsden
As a professional artist, illustrator, cartoonist and character designer, one of the highlights of my career so far is certainly that I happen to be the very first Google Doodle artist. :)

Article about the early days at Google: Wall Street Journal – Google The Beginning

It was tremendous fun and I was totally delighted when Google contacted me to be their first artist. Back then I was working out of a one bedroom studio in Santa Monica, California and we were trying to keep our little two year old baby in diapers, so the whole magical world of the internet in it’s very first pioneer days was a wonderful and thrilling place to be and I was honored and thrilled that I was able to actively participate with Google and some of the other projects I helped realize back then. Even in those early days it was clear to me (and most other people) that Google was headed for greatness. :)

The first Illustrations I made for Google, were shown on April Fool’s Day 2000. Google launched the amazing MentalPlex Technology where you could just think of what you were searching for and Google would find it. I created a little character and made some animated GIFs to explain how it worked.

My first ‘Google Doodle’ series was also the very first actual Google Doodle – namely the Alien abduction of the Google logo which happened in May 2000.

My second Google Doodle was Google Doodle II – Founding Father’s BBQ and Fireworks for the 4th of July.
Fpurth of July Doodle

The third series of Google Doodles I designed were the Olympic Doodles for the Summer Olympics in Sydney - Google Doodles Summer Olympics in Sydney with the little ‘Kangaroodle” I also created for Google and for the event. I have never received more fan mail than I did during the days these olympic google doodles were online. Hundreds, probably thousands of e-mails from all over the world. All of them positive and friendly. :)

The last Google Doodle I drew was the Global Happy New Year Doodle 2001 with the two little white bears throwing a party.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk with me down my Google Doodle memory lane.

Pirate and Parrot: Realtime Cartoon Tutorial YouTube Video

Pirate and Parrot: Realtime Cartoon Tutorial YouTube Video
Artist: Ian David Marsden

Hi,
In this brief video I am doing a rough freehand sketch of a pirate with a parrot on his shoulder. Hard to tell from the drawing which one of the two has a higher I.Q. I have to admit. Safe to assume that together they might not quite make it to 100, but that doesn’t matter. They are lovely individuals and they have hearts of gold. The parrot however is slightly distressed, because he misplaced a winning Euro Millions ticket, but that is another matter entirely.

I hope you enjoy watching the video of their creation. :)

Ian

The final result. Watch the Youtube video below to watch this drawing in real time.
I am working in SketchBook Pro software on a Wacom Cintiq 21UX screen.

By the way I am also a featured artist and Wacom evangelist on the official Wacom website.

Big Brother: Cartoon Chicken and Chick Designs for shockwave interactive shooter game

Cartoon Chickens and Chicks.
Normal state and exploded state.

Contact me for a free consultation and estimate for your illustration or animation project.

Programmed in Macromedia Shockwave it was a promotional gag for the website of the very first BIG BROTHER series in Holland for John de Mol Produkties.
Chicken Cartoon by Ian Marsden for Big Brother shockwave flash arcade game

These chickens were designed for one of the first on-line Shockwave (now known as Flash) games ever created. It was a shooter game where the chickens moved around and when you shot them they ‘exploded’ and fell down.

The shockwave animation technology was so new that back then I drew these analog on paper and colored them with watercolor and scanned them in.
Of course today I would choose to create them digitally directly in the computer, most likely as vector art. But back then that technology did not exist either.
Unless you are talking about MS Paint. Haha.

Still I think they are pretty funny even today. I hope you enjoy them.

Illustrations for Christmas Cards, Holiday Greetings, Gifts, Calendars and animated e-cards for the Holidays

Cartoon Art by Illustrator and Cartoonist Ian David Marsden

It’s that time of the year again, the Holiday Season is less than a month away …

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson almost discover Santa Claus as he is delivering presents with his reindeer.

The above is a sample illustration of an pen and ink drawing on high quality watercolor paper which was later digitally colorized. I also create digital artwork directly in graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and others depending on your requirements using a Wacom Cintiq.

I am a Featured Artist on the Wacom website by the way, if you would like to have a look at some of my work samples there also. Ian Marsden featured artist on Wacom.com

This kind of illustration, done the ‘old-fashioned way’ is rare and hard to find in this digital age.
You can commission and purchase original artwork according to your wishes and featuring your loved ones, team-mates, co-workers, employees or any situation or scenario you desire for your own framing enjoyment or as a very special and highly exclusive, truly unique gift : It is so unique, there is truly only one of it’s kind in the world.

More samples of my artwork and cartoons for various magazines, newspapers and clients all over the world  together with a short biography can be found on my homepage at:

How does the process work?

After an initial briefing via e-mail, phone, or Skype – the concept and idea is discussed clearly and a precise quote is given. A rough sketch or scribble is created for your approval before final artwork is created.  I also do caricatures based on phot0graphs, in which case you would e-mail me the relevant pictures – I have even created artwork to include favorite pets as well. I can gladly provide references of clients who were highly satisfied with the results if requested.

Digital Artwork: The final artwork as a high resolution TIFF or PDF file (or other formats as needed) ready for professional printing are uploaded and made available on my password protected server for your download or download by your printing service provider. If you require assistance in finding a good professional printer I can recommend excellent contacts with whom I have had the pleasure of working over the years.

Original Artwork: is shipped by DHL, FedEx or UPS, originals are of course all signed and dated and can also include a custom dedication, if desired.

A combination of both original and digital artwork for print is of course also possible, as pictured in the above S.Holmes meets S.Claus sample.

Payment: is via bank transfer or PayPal – Fees vary and are based on factors such as the complexity of the illustration, if the original is purchased etc.

My initial consultation is of course free of charge and I will give you a written quote before any work is commenced. Needless to say, artwork can be created for any occasion, it does not need to be holiday-oriented at all.

My fee includes all the above listed services except shipping. I prefer if you schedule the pickup using your own preferred shipping method and shipping account.
