Below are a few examples for character designs and line art illustrations that were developed for a comic strip for internal company publications. The style was to be clean and fun but also remain business like.
Clean line art, kept in black and white, with a few corporate spot colors. The story concepts would revolve around actual office themes and current projects, and sometimes also contain lighthearted tips and reminders.

Such custom designed spot illustrations can lighten up even rather dry copy and focus your attention on important passages. What’s more is that often the fee for a custom created series of illustrations is pretty much the same as what you would expect to pay for pre-existing stock art images. Except of course they look and feel custom tailored to your project and therefore elevate the production value considerably.

When I was contacted by the the world famous Friar’s Club in New York and asked if I would be interested in designing cartoon monks for their website, I was of course more than thrilled.
They wanted me to come up with a modern version of some of the classic existing monk cartoons already in the collection of the club. The website re-design required an intro animation and several static images and also lightly animated GIFs.

New York Friar’s Club (From Wikipedia)
The Friars Club is a private club in New York City, founded in 1904 and famous for its risqué celebrity roasts. The club’s membership is composed mostly of comedians and other celebrities. It is located at 57 East 55th Street between Park and Madison Avenues in a building it calls the Monastery.[1] In 2004 the City of New York named the southeast corner of 55th street where the clubhouse stands “Friars Way”.

I was tasked to come up with an idea for a fun and fitting intro flash animation, short but still interesting that would then automatically kick you forward into the main site at the end.
We bounced a couple of ideas around and eventually I drew a storyboard of the winning scenario. We would show a pan down the iconic ‘Monastery’ building to establish the shot. Then a classic New York checker cab would drive up 55th street with one of our little monks as a passenger, happily looking out of the window. The taxi pulls up outside the club, our monk walks up the stairs and rings the doorbell. The doors open and we zoom in to the club. It kicks you to the next HTML page – main splash page of the Friar’s Club website. (All of these elements, the building, the street scene, the taxi and driver, the monk, entrance etc. were created as 100% vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator CS5 and based to the last detail on photographs of the club. Even the woodwork on the door and the actual doorbell is exactly as you would find at the Friar’s club).

If you are reading this on a FLASH ENABLED computer or device, you can view the actual high resolution Flash Into by CLICKING HERE

For mobile devices here is a YouTube video which is unfortunately not in the same high resolution, but you should get the idea.

Below some of the monk character designs and animated GIFs. In some cases you might see a dark jagged line around the image. This is because the GIF’s are on a transparent background and have been issued an assigned ‘matte’ color to fit into the HTML pages.

Valentine’s Day Cartoon – Valentine’s Day Card

Valentine’s Day Cartoon – Valentine’s Day Card

Here is a funny little Valentine’s Day Cartoon for a Valentine’s card, with a cheeky little monster peeking out of the card and asking:
“Will you be my valentine?”

The illustration was created entirely as vector based artwork in Adobe Illustrator.
This card was also simultaneously created as an effective matching animated flash e-card with slight looping movement (eyes blinking, text fading in and out).

Will you be my valentine?

Illustration and cartoons for Christmas Cards, Holiday Greetings, Gifts, Calendars and Animated E-cards

Illustrations for Christmas Cards, Holiday Greetings, Gifts, Calendars and animated e-cards for the Holidays

Cartoon Art by Illustrator and Cartoonist Ian David Marsden
http://blog.marsdencartoons.com

It’s that time of the year again, the Holiday Season is less than a month away …

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson almost discover Santa Claus as he is delivering presents with his reindeer.

The above is a sample illustration of an pen and ink drawing on high quality watercolor paper which was later digitally colorized. I also create digital artwork directly in graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and others depending on your requirements using a Wacom Cintiq.

I am a Featured Artist on the Wacom website by the way, if you would like to have a look at some of my work samples there also. Ian Marsden featured artist on Wacom.com

This kind of illustration, done the ‘old-fashioned way’ is rare and hard to find in this digital age.
You can commission and purchase original artwork according to your wishes and featuring your loved ones, team-mates, co-workers, employees or any situation or scenario you desire for your own framing enjoyment or as a very special and highly exclusive, truly unique gift : It is so unique, there is truly only one of it’s kind in the world.

More samples of my artwork and cartoons for various magazines, newspapers and clients all over the world  together with a short biography can be found on my homepage at:
www.marsdencartoons.com

How does the process work?

After an initial briefing via e-mail, phone, or Skype – the concept and idea is discussed clearly and a precise quote is given. A rough sketch or scribble is created for your approval before final artwork is created.  I also do caricatures based on phot0graphs, in which case you would e-mail me the relevant pictures – I have even created artwork to include favorite pets as well. I can gladly provide references of clients who were highly satisfied with the results if requested.

Digital Artwork: The final artwork as a high resolution TIFF or PDF file (or other formats as needed) ready for professional printing are uploaded and made available on my password protected server for your download or download by your printing service provider. If you require assistance in finding a good professional printer I can recommend excellent contacts with whom I have had the pleasure of working over the years.

Original Artwork: is shipped by DHL, FedEx or UPS, originals are of course all signed and dated and can also include a custom dedication, if desired.

A combination of both original and digital artwork for print is of course also possible, as pictured in the above S.Holmes meets S.Claus sample.

Payment: is via bank transfer or PayPal – Fees vary and are based on factors such as the complexity of the illustration, if the original is purchased etc.

My initial consultation is of course free of charge and I will give you a written quote before any work is commenced. Needless to say, artwork can be created for any occasion, it does not need to be holiday-oriented at all.

My fee includes all the above listed services except shipping. I prefer if you schedule the pickup using your own preferred shipping method and shipping account.
