Pirate and Parrot: Realtime Cartoon Tutorial YouTube Video

Hi,
In this brief video I am doing a rough freehand sketch of a pirate with a parrot on his shoulder. Hard to tell from the drawing which one of the two has a higher I.Q. I have to admit. Safe to assume that together they might not quite make it to 100, but that doesn’t matter. They are lovely individuals and they have hearts of gold. The parrot however is slightly distressed, because he misplaced a winning Euro Millions ticket, but that is another matter entirely.

Character design, logos, mascots and graphics for internal and external communication

Character design for companies and corporations for their internal and external communication. Logos, mascots, fun and striking illustrations.
For internal use for presentations, pitches or in-house publications or for external PR, advertising or promotional material.

Crisp, clean and professional artwork. Tailor made and executed as vector or bitmap art.

Here are two examples of illustration artwork and character designs that I had the pleasure of creating for some of my clients.
The first is a stylized version of Joseph von Fraunhofer for the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.
Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas. In short, we forge the future.

The character was used on the web and print and in animation for events and youth-related contests. After a sketch and design phase, final artwork was created as vector art in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

The second is a poster for Norman Corwin, The Odyssey of Runyon Jones, Anthracite Films. This artwork was again vector art based and created in Adobe Illustrator CS5.

In this real-time video demonstration Ian shows how he creates a rough pencil sketch and adds a touch of storyboard digital marker coloring in Alias SketchBook Pro software on a Wacom Cintiq UX21. This kind of rough can be used as a loyout or scribble or in a storyboard to show the team and the client what direction you are going in, an animatic can also be created using these roughs before final art is produced. Finally the final art can be based on these sketches. There is another video based on this sketch where Ian shows how he creates final clean vector art in Adobe Illustrator on his youtube channel. Ballpoint Pen Telephone Doodle by Ian Marsden

When I am on the phone I am almost always doodling. Sometimes it’s just cubes and geometric 3D shapes, sometimes it’s plants growing all over the page and sometimes I just start a drawing without thinking. I have no idea what it’s going to end up being until I hang up the phone….

This example demonstrates this habit quite nicely:

I am usually always doodling. Always have been. If I am on hold on the phone or even watching TV I like to scribble away.

I find that a ball point pen is quite fun to do really fast sketches and fine hatching.

I can go through these so fast you can see the ink go down in the back.
