This is a cartoon commissioned by Urs Kneubühl for Mövenpickles Magazine, the internal publication for the Mövenpick corporation.
Urs Kneubühl was a wonderful person to work for and I would like to count him to my personal friends.
The concept was to have a party with 50 scoops of the fantastic Mövenpick ice-cream flavors. The seagull on top of the mound if ice-cream stems from the fact that ‘Möve’ means seagull in German.
I used a sketch of my own daughter Joanna for the little baby – she was 1 year old right around the time I drew this cartoon.

Bus Animation was founded by my brother Joel Ben Marsden in 2003 (his work includes stop-frame, abstract 3D, classic 2D and live action-animation combination).
Bus Animation include New York based 1st Ave machine, aardman animation LTD, flicker lab, amsterdam based post panic, sofia temperley in argentina, actop and atomic arts….some pretty outstanding partners! 
This was created as a part of a larger cartoon illustration for a calendar and other marketing and advertising applications, featuring the client’s existing mascot ‘Der Kümmerer’ riding a mountain bike. It was very important that the phone in the character’s hand was very crisp and clear and all the features visible. I therefore decided to create an almost photo-realistic 100% vector reproduction of the Nokia mobile phone, which would reproduce and scale lossless up or down to all sizes. The fine shading and hues were achieved using gradient maps.
For the final, approved version of the overall illustration which went to print, the client requested that I make a less photorealistic and more hand-drawn line-art version of the phone. The finished illustration is on display in the ‘illustration’ slideshow on my site at www.marsdencartoons.com

I recently found an unopened Smoony keychain in one of my chests of drawers. It made me smile. They really did quite a good job on these in the merchandising department – the likeness was very good. I think I will pin it up on the big pinboard in my studio…
Smoony FIS Alpine Ski World Championship Davos 2003 Keychain / Schlüsselring – Character Design by Ian MarsdenHere is a scan of a VISA card poster I illustrated back in the late eighties… One of the first major assignments I received, shortly after moving into my very first own studio. I drew a series of full-page newspaper ads for the same campaign as well, but I don’t seem to have any remaining tearsheets or copies. Oh well…
What is kind of interesting about this piece, is that it was drawn with black india ink on Marker Paper and colored with Edding Graphic Artists Markers. On this piece I opted against using acrylics and airbrushes for some reason. There were of course no computers worth mentioning back then – well, I might have had a Commodore 64 humming away somewhere in my studio at the time, come to think of it, but nothing you could have used for graphics or illustration purposes – and certainly no Photoshop or the likes….
And if you made a mistake, that was always a major problem….
