Am ersten August ist der Schweizer Nationalfeiertag. Zu diesem Anlass lassen wir hier in Cartoon-Form wie jedes Jahr ein animiertes Feuerwerk ab (animiertes GIF). Zeichnung von Ian Marsden erschienen im Nebelspalter als dreiteiliger Cartoon auf einer Doppelseite.

Bleistiftskizzen der Roboter in meinem Moleskine Skizzenbuch. Preperatory pencil sketches of the robots in my Moleskine sketchbook.
Hier ist die Illustration in Adobe Illustrator bereits ausgelegt. Das Layout wird festgelegt – der rote Rahmen zeigt den Ausschnitt wie die Zeichnung schlussendlich in der NZZ gedruckt werden wird. Die beiden Forscher sind bereits als Linienzeichnung fertig aber die Roboter existieren nur als Scribbles – bis ich mit meinen Bleistiftstudien zufrieden bin. Ich bin ein grosser Fan von Robotern also wollte ich ein paar ganz schöne ‘klassische’ Roboter entwerfen. This is the Layout stage in Adobe Illustrator. The two scientists have completed line-art but aren’t colored yet. The robots are only scribbles – I was waiting for approval from the editors and also still creating pencil sketches of the robots. I am a big fan of robots so I wanted to create some really nice, retro-style robots.

Illustration für NZZ am Sonntag 6/7/2008 ‘Der Kampf um Publikation’The most unusual and fun barber shop (or hairdresser if you prefer) in Zürich (possibly even Europe if not the world) is definitely Frankie B. in the Niederdorf, the old town of Zürich just by the Rathaus. An institution for over 25 years his shop on Rindermarkt 3 is jam-packed full of fun images including several original pieces of my artwork. Always in a good mood Frankie will give you a top-notch haircut while you listen to music, sip on an ice-cold beer and meet some of the local originals.
I never miss a visit at Frankie B. when I am in Zürich.
Der genialste Coiffeur Laden in Zürich ist für mich ohne Zweifel der von Frankie B. am Rindermarkt 3. Kein Besuch in Zürich ist für mich komplett ohne einen Haarschnitt und einige kühle Bierchen (und viele lustige Stunden) bei Freunden in seinem Laden. Wenn man genau hinsieht entdeckt man sogar einige Original-Ian Zeichnungen an den Wänden.

Here is a short YouTube video in which I very briefly show how I created the Irish Players for the new ‘Footballheroes See Red’ book using my drawing of Paul Mc Shane as an example.
I click through some of the layers and talk very briefly about some of the software used.
In the case of the Republic of Ireland team, I started with rough pencil sketches which I then scanned and imported into Adobe Illustrator CS3.
I created all my black line work in Illustrator using the pressure sensitivity from the Wacom tablet to give me the stroke widths and the right look and feel for my lines.
The Footballheroes books are printed in such high quality and on such top-notch paper that I wanted everything to look as sharp as possible.
Finally I imported the lines into Corel Painter IX.5 and colored the players using digital watercolor.
Final artwork was delivered as 300 ppi TIFF files.
The reason Paul Mc Shane is wearing a suit and a band-aid is because I wanted all of the team members to look like characters from a classic gangster movie. Why? I don’t know.
