Professional Spot Illustrations. Clean, clear and simple they bring your message across.
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009Sometimes a text just needs a few simple and clear spot illustrations to bring your point across. A sales pitch, a brochure, point of sale (POS), reports, book covers, a powerpoint presentation, a website, a user-guide or even a technical manual can be made easier to understand and more pleasant to review with a few well-placed illustrations. On the web these illustrations can be lightly animated in form of animated GIF images or Flash animation as well.
As this example shows sometimes just black and white line art or a touch of color are sufficient to make the page visually interesting and your message more powerful. Spot illustrations only take a few hours to complete and are thus not very expensive even when you commission custom-made artwork from a professional illustrator. Of course there is always the option of using pre-existing clip-art or stock illustrations, but in many cases for virtually the same price you can have proprietary artwork created tailor-made for your project. For projects which require a whole series of illustrations I am very happy to calculate a flat rate for the whole project.

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009Jerry Margolin and his wonderful collection of Sherlockian artwork
Tuesday, March 17th, 2009Jerry Margolin is well known in Sherlock Holmes connoisseur circles (and beyond) for his wonderful collection of Sherlockian art. Margolin is a tremendous Sherlock Holmes fan (and a member of the Baker Street Irregulars) and has amassed a collection of original illustration and cartoon artwork featuring Holmes and Dr. Watson which is second to none. As a matter of fact it is the largest Sherlock Holmes art collection in the world. It features such eminent artists as Will Elder, Harvey Kurtzman, Gahan Wilson, Jack Davis, Charles Schulz, Will Eisner, Ray Alma and many others. Many of these fantastic artists created Sherlockian drawings and paintings specifically for Jerry Margolin at his request.
A not inconsiderable Sherlock Holmes aficionado myself, I was more than flattered when I was contacted by Jerry Margolin in November 2008. He inquired if a certain Sherlock Holmes original drawing of mine was available for purchase. Luckily I was still in possession of this particular original and it was my pleasure to donate it Mr. Margolin for his wonderful collection. What an honor, to have one of my cartoons hanging alongside artwork by some of my personal idols (Will Elder being my childhood idol and the others not exactly chopped liver either). Right afterwards, Mr. Margolin voiced interest in another Holmes cartoon by yours truly and shortly thereafter added a second Ian David Marsden original to the collection. As I am more than likely to be drawing more S.Holmes related cartoons in the future, these might not remain the only two in his collection.
Thank you Jerry for contacting me and adding my drawings to your collection. All the very best to you and to your fantastic gallery.

My first blog from my iphone

My first blog from my iphoneBronze Plaque – Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy – Sons of the Desert Culver Hotel
Monday, July 7th, 2008This is a bronze plaque I designed for the ‘Sons of the Desert’ – The international Laurel and Hardy appreciation society. (Homepage: Sons of the Desert)
Bronze plaque designed by Ian Marsden for Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appreciation society – Culver Hotel, downtown Culver City.
Shortly after city founder Harry Culver opened the landmark Culver Hotel it appeared in several films throughout the ‘golden age of comedy’. Producer Hal Roach featured the building in his ‘Our Gang’, ‘Charley Chase’ and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy comedies. The hotel is particularily prominent in his films “Putting Pants on Philip” and “Leave ‘em Laughin’” with Laurel and Hardy. Placed by the way out west tent of the sons of the desert 2003.
Ian Marsden the artist who designed the plaque also designed the ‘Duke’s Place’ logo and mural, trompe l’oeil for the lobby bar and also was commissioned to paint several large pop art canvases for the hotel restaurant.

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008Here is a short YouTube video in which I very briefly show how I created the Irish Players for the new ‘Footballheroes See Red’ book using my drawing of Paul Mc Shane as an example.
I click through some of the layers and talk very briefly about some of the software used.
In the case of the Republic of Ireland team, I started with rough pencil sketches which I then scanned and imported into Adobe Illustrator CS3.
I created all my black line work in Illustrator using the pressure sensitivity from the Wacom tablet to give me the stroke widths and the right look and feel for my lines.
The Footballheroes books are printed in such high quality and on such top-notch paper that I wanted everything to look as sharp as possible.
Finally I imported the lines into Corel Painter IX.5 and colored the players using digital watercolor.
Final artwork was delivered as 300 ppi TIFF files.
The reason Paul Mc Shane is wearing a suit and a band-aid is because I wanted all of the team members to look like characters from a classic gangster movie. Why? I don’t know.
New Copyright Laws for artists, illustrators, photographers – Orphan
Saturday, April 26th, 2008Forwarded by a friend:
I want all your artist friends to read it too: They are trying to pass a new law by the congress that will change copyright laws as we know them and make living from our art very expensive, difficult or most likely impossible. Below is a link to an interview with Brad Holland interviewed by Mark Simon
