From the Marsden Moleskine Dungeon

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

It’s been a while since I posted some scans from one of my lovely Moleskine sketchbooks.

Here is a recent double-page with completely pointless and absolutely not topic-related cartoons and doodles.

Humorous Children’s Book and Science Fiction illustration by Ian Marsden

This is an unpublished self-promotional humorous children’s book and science fiction illustration featuring Bombo the Bear, Chester the Butler and their time travelling friends.

In the 1980s I wrote and illustrated several episodes of ‘Idi and Bombo’ about Bombo the Bear and Idi the bird for Swiss Television DRS (Fernsehen DRS). Later I had a regular full page color ‘Bombo’ comic in the Sonntagsblick Newspaper.

It was rendered in pen and ink, colored pencils and watercolors. (only the sky gradient is digitally created).

Pirates plank walking cartoon (Playboy) by Ian Marsden 1996

Cartoon of Pirates walking the plank © 1997 by Ian D. Marsden

This is one of several Playboy-style cartoons I submitted to Michelle Urry at Playboy Magazine which led her to think that my drawing style might be a match for Playboy. Unfortunately Hugh Hefner himself disagreed with Mrs. Urry and even though I got this close – I missed it by ‘that much’ as Maxwell Smart might say.

This was created using pen and ink, colored pencil and watercolor, gouache on Bristol Board.

Christoph Blocher (SVP/UDC) Nebelspalter Cartoon from 1993 – by Ian Marsden

Christoph Blocher (SVP/UDC) Nebelspalter Cartoon from 1993 - by Ian Marsden

Christoph Blocher Pen and ink and watercolor cartoon for Nebelspalter Magazine, 1993 by Ian Marsden.

Christoph Blocher is a highly divisive Swiss political figure. He has frequently been compared by the media and his political opponents to figures such as Jean-Marie Le Pen and Jörg Haider. Blocher is the leader of the  SVP/UDC party’s nationalist wing, which dominates the party’s delegation to the National Council.

Menu Card illustrations by Ian Marsden Sandy Lane Hotel Barbados, West Indies

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Menu card for the three different sumptuous buffets being offered at the Sandy Lane Luxury Golf and Spa Resort at St James in Barbados, West Indies with 3 original watercolor illustrations by Ian Marsden.

I was in Barbados at the time and enjoyed being commissioned to create this artwork very much.

Of course I had to try the buffet selections on several occasions to make certain I got just the right feel of the ambience.

This golf cartoon was originally in color, this is the only reproduction I still have.

Misunderstanding on the golf course with a perceived egg - Golf Cartoon by Ian Marsden

It was created using a pen and ink and gouache on D’Arches watercolor paper.

It depicts a bunch of highly distrustful birds who have ganged up on a poor golfer somewhere in Scotland. Their suspicion seems to be that it is not a golf ball at all but rather an egg he might be playing with.

It was published in the Swiss Nebelspalter magazine in 1991 and was exhibited at the

4th International Cartoon Biennale in Davos, Switzerland
(22. July – 22. August 1992 Kongresszentrum Davos)

The original was purchased at the Cartoon Biennale Davos by well-known Swiss media personality, actor, comedian, writer, producer Hansjörg Bahl and is in his personal collection.
